Chaning of Optative Sentences


Optative Sentences;
Definition; in optative sentences we show the pray or wish.
Note; if we want to change the Optative sentences from direct speech into indirect speech then we will act upon the following Rules.
Rules of Optative sentences:
1.     “May” changes into “might” and it will come after the reported subject.
2.     The verb of “reported speech” will not change.
3.     Exclamation mark will change into “full stop”.
4.     “That” will come between two speeches.
5.     The reported verb sometime change into “prayed” and some time into “prayed for”
Question; where the reported verb changes into “prayed” and where in “prayed for”
Answer; if the is object of reporting speech is related with the subject of reported speech the “reporting verb” changes into prayed for.
For example;
Direct speech
Indirect speech
He said to me, “may you pass your exam”.
He prayed for me that I might pass my exam.
She said to me, may you live long”.
She prayed form me that I might live long.
 If there is object of reporting speech is not related with the subject of reported speech the reporting verb will change into “prayed”.
For example;
Direct Speech
Indirect Speech
She said to me, may he pass the exam”.
She prayed that he might pass the exam.
They said to her,” may they come today.
They prayed that they might come that day.
Note; if there is any wish/desire then we act upon the following rules for changing the direct sentences into indirect speech.
1.     The “reporting verb” will changes into wished.
2.     “Oh that” and “would that” are removed.
3.     “That” will come between two speeches.
4.     The “exclamation mark” will change into “full stop”.
For example;
She said,” May God bless you”. (Direct Speech)
She prayed that god might bless me. (Indirect Speech)
He said, may you ever be happy”. (Direct Speech)
He prayed that he might ever be happy. (Indirect Speech)
She said,” may you ever smile”. (Direct Speech)
She prayed that I might ever smile. (Indirect Speech)
They said, “May get through examination”. (Direct Speech)
They prayed that they might get through examination. (Indirect speech)
She said to her son, May you succeed in life”. (Direct Speech)

She prayed for her son that he might succeed in life. (Indirect Speech)
