Definition; Those sentences which show the sudden and strong feeling of sorrow, surprises, and happy are called exclamatory sentences.
Note; if we want to change exclamatory sentences from direct speech into indirect speech then we will act upon the following rules.
The Rules of Exclamatory Sentences
1. Exclamatory sentences will change into simple sentences.
2. Interjections are removed.
3. Exclamation marks are changed into full stop.
4. “That” will be used between two sentences.
5. If there is any sorrow in reported speech, the reporting verb change into “Exclaimed with sorrow/grief.
6. If there is any happiness in reported, the reporting verb changed into exclaimed with joy.
7. If there in any surprise in reported speech, the reporting verb change into exclaimed with surprise/wonder/astonishment.
For example;
He said,” Hurrah! We finally made it.” (Direct Speech)
He exclaimed with great joy that he finally made it. (Indirect Speech)
She said, “Wow! What a car.” (Direct Speech)
She exclaimed with excitement what the car it was. (Indirect Speech)
Ali said,” ho! How terrible is the story.” (Direct Speech)
Ali exclaimed with sorrow that the story was terrible. (Indirect Speech)
He said,”ho! What is this?” (Direct speech)
He exclaimed with wonder that what that was. (Indirect Speech)
He said,” Ah! It’s my painting.” (Direct Speech)
He exclaimed with joy that it was his painting. (Indirect Speech)
